Jazz Drum Audition Process

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO PERFORM FROM AN ORIGINAL OF THEIR AUDITION MUSIC FOR THE RECORDING

AUDITION TIMES
Audition times will scheduled for 15 minute intervals.

 

ADJUDICATION
Students who audition under the Jazz Audition format are applying for acceptance into the Festival Jazz Ensemble. A separate audition is required to be considered for acceptance into other groups.

Students may audition on different jazz instruments as long as they were correctly listed on their school’s computer application for Jazz Ensemble Auditions once for each audition and the appropriate number of fees were paid. Students may not audition on a different instrument than the one(s) listed for them on their school’s computer application for Jazz Ensemble Auditions.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
To complete their audition, students must:

  • Perform the drum part for the selected ‘Backup Big Band’ chart with the Little Big Band (adult performers on the other parts) to highlight the student’s ability to drive a full jazz ensemble and solo on the drums.

• Perform the drum part for the selected ‘Backup Soloist’ chart with the Little Big Band (adult performers on the other parts) to highlight the student’s ability to backup a soloist.

• Demonstrate four different styles of music The first being Funk and the other

three , one selected by the adjudicator from each of these groupings:

Group 1: Jazz Waltz, Medium Swing, Up-tempo Swing;

Group 2: Jazz Ballad, Second Line Swing, Shuffle;

Group 3: 12/8 Afro-Cuban, Bossa, Samba, Mambo / Salsa

  • Sightread a drum part from a big band chart with the Little Big Band
