Jazz Drum Audition Process - Audio Recordings

Six recordings submitted for a jazz drum audition

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO PERFORM FROM AN ORIGINAL OF THEIR AUDITION MUSIC FOR THE RECORDING

AUDITION TIMES
Audition times will vary based on the length of the piece being performed.  Rests need be counted through in tempo. 

 

ADJUDICATION
Students who audition under the Jazz Audition format are applying for acceptance into the Festival Jazz Ensemble. A separate audition is required to be considered for acceptance into other groups.

Students may audition on different jazz instruments as long as they were correctly listed on their school’s computer application for Jazz Ensemble Auditions once for each audition and the appropriate number of fees were paid. Students may not audition on a different instrument than the one(s) listed for them on their school’s computer application for Jazz Ensemble Auditions.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
To complete their audition, students must:

  • Audio record just their performance of the drum part for the selected ‘Backup Big Band’ chart with a recording available from the website for this purpose to highlight the student’s ability to drive a full jazz ensemble and solo on the drums.  The recording should not include the audio from the Little Big Band recording (the student should record their performance while listening to the provided recording on headphones)

• Audio record  justtheir performance of the drum part for the selected ‘Backup Soloist’ chart with a recording available from the website for this purpose to highlight the student’s ability to backup a soloist.  The recording should not include the audio from the Little Big Band recording (the student should record their performance while listening to the provided recording on headphones)

• Audio record their demonstration of four different styles of music The first being Funk and the other

three being the student selecting one from each of these groupings:

Group 1: Jazz Waltz, Medium Swing, Up-tempo Swing;

Group 2: Jazz Ballad, Second Line Swing, Shuffle;

Group 3: 12/8 Afro-Cuban, Bossa, Samba, Mambo / Salsa

The student should identify which style they are performing at the beginning of each recording.

 

RECORDING SUBMISSIONS

To complete each student's audition, teachers must:

  • Submit six recordings for each student through the Upload site.

  • The first recording will be the Backup Big Band chart, the second will be the Backup Soloist & Solo chart, the third will be the Funk style, and the last three will be the three styles.

  • Auditions will not be considered unless all six recordings are uploaded for the student applicant.

  • All recordings must be in MP3 format
